When I land at JFK from Israel, do I need to go through customs to get to YYZ or do I do that in Canada?

I land at JFK at 4 and would love to grab a cheap and direct flight at 5.30 in a different terminal. As I will be in transit from Tel Aviv to Toronto but flying different airlines, do I need to go through customs at JFK or can I just grab my bag and run?
