My boyfriend said to me yesterday, "I want you to look like Avil Lavigne"?

I was quite insulted and thought this was very rude. When I asked him about it he didn't think it was any big deal he said - that he would never say comments like this about 'real women' and only makes these kind of comments about movie stars, models etc because they are up on billboards for this purpose - they are the best of the best (in terms of looks). He then said his attraction to me is not based on "looks" but on how much he enjoys being with me (or any person, for that matter). Earlier in the day, he also told me I take a very unflattering picture and I look "ugly" when I don't smile. I'm trying to blow this off but, it makes me feel very unattractive and like he doesn't think I'm attractive. I asked him how he would feel if I said comments like that about him and he said it wouldn't bother him at all that he doesn't think he's the best looking guy in the world and he's very confident. Is this just a man/woman type difference and I should let it go, or is he a as*hole?
